Brick Patio Materials
The material that is used in the construction of most brick patios and walkways is paving brick. The major difference between paving brick and regular brick is that paving brick is much harder, meaning it is able to handle the stress caused by foot and/or motorized traffic much better. There are two types of paving bricks usually used in the construction of brick patios:
Clay paving brick: This brick patio material is typically available in rectangles that measure four by eight inches. Normally, clay paving brick is available in either 1 1/2 inch or 2 3/8 inch thicknesses.
Concrete paving brick: There are a larger number of options with this brick patio material. It is available in numerous shapes and sizes, unlike clay paving brick, and it is also available in a number of colors. The standard thickness for this brick patio material is 2 3/8 inches.
Brick Patio Advantages
As any knowledgeable patio contractor will tell you, there are numerous advantages of choosing brick for your patio instead of other types of material. One advantage is that brick patios do not require regular maintenance and upkeep. Brick patios are very durable; they can withstand moisture and cold weather better than other materials. The major disadvantage of a brick patio is that the material is more expensive than some others. However, many homeowners find the investment worth it because of the fact that brick patios are low maintenance and also add value to homes.
Brick Patio Installation
Installing a brick patio is a complex and time-consuming process. Brick patio design and installation involves laying down a base of either flexible material like gravel or sand or rigid material like concrete. The bricks are then placed in their desired pattern on top of this base. Mortar will be used to join the bricks if the base is composed of a rigid material.
